Make every rep count.
- 01
Grab the dumbbells from the floor with a neutral grip (palms facing each other). Rest one end of each dumbbell in your hip crease, then sit on the end of an incline bench.
- 02
Set up safely: bring the dumbbells close to your chest and lean back onto the bench under control, keeping your wrists stacked over your elbows.
- 03
Take a deep breath and press up until your arms are straight overhead (don’t slam your elbows—finish with control).
- 04
Lower slowly: let your elbows travel down and slightly out until the handles are roughly chest level (or as deep as your shoulders comfortably allow). Keep your shoulders pulled down and back against the bench.
- 05
Exhale as you drive the dumbbells back up, squeezing your chest at the top.
- 06
Repeat for reps.
- 07
Getting out safely: Avoid dumping the dumbbells to the sides unless you’re experienced. Instead, rotate back to a neutral grip, bring your knees up so the dumbbell ends touch your thighs, then use your legs to rock yourself back to seated and stand up under control.
